Sublime design on the edge of Lake Pupuke

OneRoof Article: Award-winning house is a master class in quality and artistry.

A couple who dreamed of park or lake views found a site delivering both spectacularly and had an artfully designed, award-winning home created to soak up the outlook.

Their house at 13 Kowhai Street, Takapuna, is being sold by set sale closing December 2, by Premium agent Corey Knapp.

The private, peacefully set home, which won 2017 Master Builders House of the Year awards, enjoys panoramic elevated views over neighbouring Killarney Park and looking north over Lake Pupuke.

One of the owners says: “I’m a perfectionist and this was the last house we were going to build so it didn’t matter about the cost, we just wanted it to be perfect.”

The house was designed to have both park and lake views.

After raising their family, the owners, a businessman and his artist wife qualified in Fine Art and Design, wanted to move near Takapuna friends. In 2014 the agent now selling this home directed them to its 851sq m section, suggesting they create something unique.

The artist owner says: “Our dream was to have park views or lake views and we got both.”

The couple sought an exceptionally high-quality, predominantly single-level home, embracing minimalist and Scandinavian aspects. They briefed two different architects plus an architectural designer, commissioning all to respond before choosing Mark Wilson’s design. The resulting 320sq m solid masonry, air-conditioned home is roofed with custom zinc and accented by schist. Huge forethought went into myriad details.

It is tucked away down a gated driveway on leafy landscaped grounds.

A bridge over a reflection pond leads to the front door, creating huge impact.

The artist owner says: “This property has a very zen feeling.”

There’s another reflection pond outside the open-plan family-dining-kitchen expanse which showcases a cathedral ceiling and oak flooring. It celebrates the views, as does the north-facing deck it flows out to, which incorporates an al fresco dining area.

The house is wrapped around reflection ponds at the front door and outside the open-plan family-dining-kitchen.

Entertaining options include a loggia off the open-plan area and the back-up of the cinema room’s additional living space. The cinema can alternately be a bedroom utilising a concealed doorway into the en suite of another bedroom.

The master bedroom with dressing room revels in the outlook as does its en suite’s sumptuous freestanding bath. An office, laundry and powder room complete this level.

The loft level has an en suited multi-functional room Basement level has a gym plus a plant room.

The owners are ready to retire and leave Auckland.

Agent Corey Knapp says: “This flawlessly constructed, artfully designed luxury home enjoying sweeping views over Lake Pupuke and private access to Killarney Park epitomises park-lake perfection.”
