MDS was founded by Director Mark Wilson in 2002. Mark has been involved in architectural design, construction and construction management for over 25 years. Mark is an architectural judge for the Registered Master Builders 'House of the Year' awards.
Over the years MDS have established strong working relationships with various consultants, building contractors and planners. These consultants and builders are familiar with our work and high expectations which ensures our dealings are efficient, clear and precise.
Director
Mark is the Principal and Design Director of MDS Design. He and wife Linda founded MDS in 2002.
Mark has worked in architectural design, construction and construction management for over 35 years. Mark has been an Architectural Judge for the New Zealand Registered Master Builder House of the Year Awards for 13 years, in recent years taking on the role of a National Judge.
Mark is the creative mind behind the design of all MDS homes, including interior design, with the support of our small team.
He is passionate about collaborating with clients to create bespoke, timeless design and interiors that reflect their lifestyle and taste.
Director
Linda founded MDS with Mark in 2002.
Linda has many roles here at MDS, but you will likely deal with her in an accounts capacity as she leads and maintains our accounts systems, overseeing all accounts payable and receivable functions including invoices, reconciling creditor statements and completing credit applications. Linda has over 35 years experience dedicated to accounting roles in a range of industries.
General Manager
Matt has been with MDS for 20 years and works very closely with Mark. His expertise is in coordinating the technical side of the design process and managing our team of technicians to deliver construction documentation with a specific focus on bespoke detailed solutions and fully coordinated designs.
Matt is solution focused with a natural ability to follow through and ensure efficient, effective resolutions for clients and their construction teams.
Administrator
Mel plays a key role in our operations, ensuring things run smoothly behind the scenes and supporting Mark and Matt. Joining us in 2014, she brought her administrative experience in property investment, property management & construction here and overseas to our business. Overseeing our systems and processes, liaising with clients, consultants, building contractors and Council, Mel coordinates the many administrative aspects of the design and consent process.
Architectural Technician
Athena graduated from University of Auckland with a Master of Architecture and Urban Design in 2018 and joined our team shortly after.
She brings enthusiasm and fresh outlook to our draughting team and her diligence and expertise with the latest CAD software ensures timely and accurate preparation of our plans.
Architectural Technician
The newest member of our team, Erika, joined us in 2022.
She has a Bachelor in Architecture and Urban Planning, and a Post Graduate degree in Engineering Safety at Work and adds to our team her ten years experience as an architect in Brazil, and six years local experience in New Zealand.
We purchased a ten year old MDS designed house in 2016 and, although we were not involved in its design or planning, we are delighted with the house and its design. The setting is beautiful, the house solidly built and the design perfect. Apart from a guest’s bedroom, the house is on one level with French doors to most rooms and this creates an open and airy feeling. The rooms are spacious and flow from one to another and most guests refer to the house as a resort as it gives that relaxed impression.
We engaged Mark to advise on some minor alterations and his advice was invaluable. He seems able to combine the skills of creating a solid and beautiful looking house with those that understand how a house should work.
We had a great experience building our new masonry home with MDS. We are the proud owners of a single level masonry home in a rural setting and our neighbours on both sides also chose MDS to design their homes.
From the initial meeting during the concept phase, we were guided by Mark's expertise, design flair and building knowledge.
After finalising our vision Mark again offered his guidance during our interior fit out design. This enabled us to make the right selections with colours, flooring and ensured a continuous flow throughout our home.
We love our new home, and particularly the open plan layout which makes it so flexible for entertaining anywhere from 4 to 24 guests.

After interviewing five leading Auckland based architectural companies, my wife and I chose MDS to build a substantial country residence in Karaka. Looking at our home now, we know we made the right decision.
One of the key reasons we chose MDS, apart from their impressive portfolio, was because from our initial discussions we really felt that we were not just being listened to, we were being understood. MDS just get it.
During the process MDS offered much more than just a house design. MDS were able to design and manage virtually every facet of construction including, kitchen, bathroom and laundry cabinetry and fitout, landscaping, exterior and interior furnishings, carpeting, fabric selections and all general fitments and finishings, including special items such as custom designed internal and external doors, architrave and skirting which really personalised our home. The benefit of this was complete design control and integration from start to finish, whilst utilising exclusive materials and design that really set our home apart.
If we ever build again MDS is the only company we will use!

We engaged Mark Wilson and team at MDS to re-clad and enhance (to a high-spec build) our home at Coatesville - the project grew a lot bigger than originally expected - yes, the dreaded leaky home issues. The project turned into a major renovation. As our home was pulled apart, MDS suggested some internal modifications - walls pulled out, walls relocated; bathrooms and kitchen completely rebuilt. The result was a quality desirable family home. When we put it on the market early 2014 it sold in less than a week.
Mark Wilson, MDS, and the builder, Henry Dunham Building, made the project easy for us. They worked seamlessly with the Council and streamlined the whole process; the Council Inspector actually complimented us on our team and said that it was a pleasure to work with such professional people.
Mark listened to us, provided us with fresh ideas and really clever solutions. He project managed this renovation and kept the stress to a minimum. Mark has very high standards and will not accept anything less which took all the pressure off us.
We have heard from contractors that it is uncommon for clients to use the same architect a second time - we have no such hesitation, and to put proof to this statement we have again engaged MDS to design and project manage our beautiful home on Campbells Bay - a long term dream of ours which is almost complete. The design features and detail are exquisite; it takes our breathe away each time we visit the site.
